With some accessorizing and styling, you can pull of that hot, mysterious dark look, while still maintaining the mystery, but first, what exactly is the goth style?

Goth Culture

On a cultural level, the goth sub-culture is based on the attitude of “breaking the mold”. It stands for challenging the status quo and pushing the boundaries set by society.
To be simple, a goth can be considered to be one who finds dark things beautiful. They simply love things that are dark and mysterious. The goth culture reflects this sentiment quite well, with it’s dark and macabre overtones.
Gothic culture has a close affinity with all things dark and mysterious, hence the close association with the supernatural. The culture has grown over the years and has produced incredible works of art, from music to art, films and fashion. For example, gothic themes have been featured in horror and supernatural films, with many characters who explore the supernatural, such as witches, shamans or gypsies.
The Goth subculture developed in England in the early 80’ from the audience of goth rock, which was itself an offshoot of punk genre. The name was even derived directly form the music genre itself. The subculture has drawn inspiration from many sources, some contemporary, other’s quite ancient. It was as influenced by the contemporary music of the time as it was by mythology from various religions, such as Celtic, Christian and Egyptian mythology, as well as some pagan traditions.
Notable figure that are reckoned to have influenced the subculture include, Nietzsche, Comte de Lautreamont, Jean-Paul Sarte and Slavador Dali. Some popular writers that also influenced the movement was Ann Radcliffe, Edgar Allan Poe, Oscar Wilde, H.P. Lovecraft.
The Gothic aesthetic revolves around dark clothing, as well as makeup and hair, which contrasts with the pale skin, material and fashion of the Victorian age.

Gothic Clothing

Gothic style of clothing is one that is decidedly dark and mysterious, with a homogenous and antique look. It is somewhat morbid and dark. Typically, it includes pale complexions, black colored hair, lips and clothes. The feminine goth may use dark eyeliner, and fingernail polish. The style is influenced by the Victorian and Elizabethan era clothing.
It has been described as a combination of black velvets, fishnets, leather and lace with red or purple highlights, and has corsets, gloves, stilettos and silver jewelry and accessories.
When it comes to goth fashion, nothing makes a dark or pastel gown, skirt or corset stand out more than its accessories, especially lace.
Many styles of goth clothing involve lace in some form or the other, whether on skirts, corsets or gowns. Other common accessories that are used, especially in conjunction with lace are gems and roses.
